The Crucifixion

Introduction: Having condemned Jesus, the Jews needed to get permission from the Roman government to crucify him. This is the story in God’s Word. 1 Then the religious leaders rose from the trial and led Jesus off to Pilate the Roman governor. And they

began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man threatening our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king." Jn So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews? “My kingdom is not of this world,” Jesus replied. 37 Pilate said, "You are a king, then!" And Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. For this

reason I was born, and came into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice." “What is truth?" Pilate asked. And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to the religious leaders, "I find no fault in Him at all.” Luke But the chief priests stirred up the crowd and they shouted, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Then Pilate

said to them, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. But the Jewish leaders were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of the chief priests and the crowd prevailed. So Pilate granted their demand and they led Jesus away to be crucified. As they led Jesus away, the soldiers seized a man named Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from

the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place

called the Skull, they crucified Jesus along with the criminals- one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And the soldiers cast lots for his clothing. The people stood watching, and the rulers laughed at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him sour wine and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." And there was a notice written above him: THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then one of the criminals who hung beside Jesus hurled insults at him: "If you the Christ save yourself and

us!" But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour and the curtain

of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. A member of the Jewish Council named Joseph of Arimathea, a good man who had not consented to the

Council’s decision asked Pilate if he could take the body of Jesus down from the cross and bury it. Joseph wrapped Jesus body in a linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, in which no one had yet been laid. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee watched where his body was laid. Then they went

home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
